Every September the same thing happens in my inbox. Someone who has spent the summer on a boat, or in Sicily, or simply working, writes to ask about Christmas. Not next Christmas. This one. Somewhere warm, or somewhere with snow, a good hotel, ten days, the whole family. And I have to explain, kindly, that the hotel they have in mind has been sold since the week after last New Year, that the alternatives come with a seven-night minimum and a dinner they will be paying for on December 31 whether they attend it or not, and that the deposit they are about to wire becomes fully non-refundable in about four weeks.
None of that is a reason not to go. The two weeks around Christmas and New Year are the best-run fortnight in the hotel calendar: the staff are at full strength, the guest chefs are in residence, the trees go up on December 20, and the people in the bar have been coming for twenty years. It is just that the festive season is sold as a different product from the rest of the year, with its own contract, and most travelers only find that out when they try to book it.
So here is how it works, with the real numbers from the terms and conditions the hotels publish, and the calendar I use with clients. If you already have Christmas 2026 booked, skip to the end, because there is a date coming up that matters. If you do not, this is what I would do.
What counts as the festive season, and when does it start?
Roughly December 18 to January 3, though the best resorts now run a full four weeks. Badrutt's Palace in St. Moritz defines its Christmas and New Year period as December 18, 2026 to January 3, 2027 in its published terms; One&Only Reethi Rah in the Maldives opens its season with a tree lighting on December 20 and closes it with an Orthodox New Year gala on January 13. The point is that the hotel does not care which nights you want. If any of your nights fall inside the window, the festive terms apply to the whole booking.
That is why I ask clients for their dates before I ask for their destination. A family arriving December 26 and leaving January 2 is inside the window everywhere. A couple who can leave on January 4 and stay a week is, at most hotels, buying a completely different and far more flexible product, in the same room, with the same snow.
How much of a festive booking is non-refundable, and by when?
All of it, and sooner than you think. Badrutt's Palace is the clearest example because it publishes the schedule. For stays in the Christmas and New Year period, 20 percent of the price is due at booking and is non-refundable from that moment; a further 80 percent is due by October 15, 2026; and from October 16, a cancellation or no-show costs 100 percent of the stay. Compare that with a reservation at the same hotel for January 4 to 7, 2027, which can be cancelled free of charge up to 30 days before arrival, with full payment due only at that point. Same building, same view of the frozen lake, opposite contract.
The Palace also requires every guest aged 12 and over to take its dining package in the festive period, a daily credit of CHF 160 per adult toward dinner at Le Relais or Le Restaurant, or CHF 100 at the other venues, with drinks on top. In return, the ski pass is included in the rate from December 18 to January 3. It is a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel with 163 rooms, 47 of them suites, and this winter its season runs December 3 to March 30. The hotel is not being difficult. It is telling you, in writing, that the fortnight is sold out by the time October comes around, and that it will not hold a room for you on a promise.
Why are the Alps so hard to book for Christmas?
Because the hotels are tiny and open for four months. Gstaad Palace, which opened on December 8, 1913 and is now in its third generation of Scherz family ownership, opens for the winter on December 15, 2026 and closes on March 7, 2027. Les Airelles in Courchevel, a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star property, has 32 bedrooms and 15 suites, 47 keys in total. Cheval Blanc Courchevel, Four-Star, has 36. When a hotel with 36 rooms takes its whole year of demand in a seventeen-week window, and three of those weeks carry most of it, the returning guests re-book at checkout and the room never reaches the open market.
That is the mechanism behind every "sold out" you will hear this month. It is not a waiting list in the ordinary sense. It is a queue of families who have been in the same suite for a decade and who signed for next year on the way out. The practical rule for Christmas is the same everywhere: if you want a specific hotel in a specific week, book it the January before, with a deposit, and accept the terms.
Is the New Year's Eve gala dinner really compulsory?
Yes, in the Maldives and much of Asia, and the price is real. Resorts there sell Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve as compulsory supplements attached to the room: if you are in-house that night, you pay for the gala whether you sit down or not. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island publishes its 2026 number, a compulsory New Year's Eve supplement of USD 1,093.95 per adult including taxes for anyone staying on December 31, with children five and under free and six to eleven at half price. At the top of the market the supplements are higher and the hotels are less inclined to print them, which is one of the things I check before I quote a festive week, because a family of five can add the price of an extra night to the bill on the last evening of the year.
What you get for it has become a genuine reason to go. One&Only Reethi Rah, a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star resort on a 109-acre island in North Malé Atoll, announced in August that Jessie J will play New Year's Eve 2026 on the beach, for resort guests only, after a cocktail reception and a dinner built as theatre. The Nautilus, 26 houses and residences on Thiladhoo in the Baa Atoll biosphere reserve, does a Christmas Eve feast on Thyme Beach and a New Year's Eve "Bohemian Ball" that ends at midnight, with executive chef Kengo Tomita running the chef's tables. Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Four-Star, has its tree-lighting reception and "Paradise Found" New Year party on the calendar with the detailed 2026 program still to be confirmed, which tells you how far ahead the rooms sell relative to the entertainment. Minimum stays across the top Maldivian resorts run to a week and more over the peak nights, and several will not let you arrive or leave on December 31 at all. What about the Caribbean and Thailand this year?
Two of the hotels I would normally send you to are closed until the autumn, which changes the map. Amanyara, on Providenciales in Turks and Caicos, is shut for enhancements until October 20, 2026, so its festive inventory came back late and I would not assume the returning-guest queue is as long as usual. Amanpuri in Phuket closed on May 15 and reopens tomorrow, September 14, after four months of work; its New Year's Eve is the storied annual one, a gala dinner, DJs, dancing and fireworks late into the night, and the themed feasts through the season bring in guest chefs from other Aman houses. For the Caribbean proper, the calculus is in my St. Barths versus Turks and Caicos piece: Gustavia over New Year is the most concentrated week of glamour in the region, the minimum stays run long, and the regulars booked in the spring. Turks and Caicos is the easier answer for a family who want to be in the water by lunch on the 26th.
What should you do if you have not booked Christmas yet?
Move the dates before you move the destination. The single most useful thing in the Badrutt's terms is the second schedule: January 4 to 7 is outside the festive period, and the same hotel that wants 100 percent of your money by October 15 for Christmas week will hold a room in early January on 30 days' notice. Every serious hotel has a version of that line in its contract, and the week after New Year is when the regulars have gone home, the snow is at its best, the staff are still at full strength, and a resort like Reethi Rah is still running its program through the Orthodox New Year gala on January 13. Take the children out of school two days early in January rather than a week early in December.
If it has to be the peak nights, use the calendar the hotels use. At most of these properties the returning guests re-book next year's dates at checkout, so if you can get in anywhere this year, even for a shorter stay, you are buying your place in the 2027 queue. And if the trip is a city rather than a beach, plan a year ahead there too: tickets for the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert are allocated by draw, with applications accepted between February 1 and 28 for the following season, a maximum of two tickets per applicant, results by email in March, and prices from 40 to 1,320 euros. The 2027 draw closed in February 2026. The 2028 one opens in February 2027, and I put the reminder in my clients' diaries now.
What You Actually Want to Know
When should you book a hotel for Christmas and New Year?
Twelve months ahead for a specific hotel in the Alps, the Maldives or St. Barths, ideally while you are checked in the year before. By September the peak nights at the best hotels are gone or held on waitlists; the deposits due in October are for rooms that were booked in the spring.
What is a typical festive season minimum stay?
Seven nights is the working assumption at the top Maldivian resorts and in the Alps over Christmas and New Year, and some properties block arrivals and departures on December 31 entirely. Outside the peak window, from about January 4, most of the same hotels drop to their normal two- or three-night minimums.
Are Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve gala dinners mandatory?
In the Maldives and most of Asia, yes: they are billed as compulsory supplements for anyone in-house that night. When does a festive booking become non-refundable?
Earlier than the trip feels real. At Badrutt's Palace, 20 percent is non-refundable from the day you book and the balance is due, non-refundable, by October 15, 2026. Most peak-season contracts in the Alps and the Indian Ocean follow a similar shape, with full prepayment in October or November. Travel insurance that covers the whole amount is worth having.
Where can you still go for Christmas 2026 at a good hotel?
The honest answer is the week after New Year, at exactly the hotels you wanted. If it must be the peak nights, consider properties whose inventory came back late this year, like Amanyara, reopening October 20, and Amanpuri, reopening September 14, and be flexible on the room category. Tell an advisor your dates first and your dream hotel second.
